Family Leadership Series – 1

Leadership is not a word we associate with families, more often than not it conjures up ideas of an elected leader or the head of an organisation.

However, as parents of children/people with disabilities, we unknowingly use leadership skills as an integral part of our carers role; organising supports and services, researching topics such as NDIS funding or the human rights of people with disability and advocating for our family members when necessary.

These and many other activities we take part in as parents of people/children with disability, provide an opportunity that may highlight the emergence of potential family leaders within families.

Through the sharing of story and showcasing, the Family Leadership series’ goal is to drive interest in parents as peers in family leadership roles, helping to improve inclusion, breaking down social barriers for their family members and effecting systems change where possible.

In the first webinar we are delighted to have Sylvana Mahmic, the CEO of Plumtree and two of her peer team, Melo and Kylie, talk with us about their experience as practicing family leaders in the disability space.

Sylvana is an advocate for early childhood intervention and self-management. She has served on over 15 reference and advisory groups in addition to five Ministerial appointments including membership of the Disability Council NSW.

Sylvana promotes peer work and has incubated two new peer-led organisations. She is completing her PhD on individualised funding and supports her son to self-manage his funding.

You can read more about Sylvana in her bio –  Sylvana Mahmic Bio (1)

There will be time for Q&A’s with Sylvana,Melo and Kylie so make sure you have all your peer questions ready!
