For years people thought they had to tell me what to do. I don’t really like that and it didn’t work for me. I don’t want someone telling me what I should buy when I do my shopping, as I know what I like to spend my money on and what is important for me. My decisions may not be for everyone but this is my life.
I worked with Valued Lives to think about a plan that would work for me.Valued Lives helped me to find Tony, my mentor. Tony and I are mates; he listens to me and helps me with things that I need. He’s supported me to renovate my flat and I am now really proud of my place; I’ve got a new kitchen and bedroom and my home is looking really good. Now that I know Tony well, he is going to help me with other things in my life that I need to think about; my health and plans to retire from work. It will take a while but I’m finally on my way with people from Valued Lives who I know and trust.
My family and I are in the process of planning for my best future with the support of Valued Lives. Each month Valued Lives facilitates meetings with my family, friends and I to plan and discuss each step of the way to me living as independently as I can within my own community.
The care, respect and guidance Valued Lives has given all of us has been a life saver and gives us great hope and excitement about me living my best life in the future while bringing balance back to my parents’ and brothers’ lives.
I live in my own place in Gosnells. Valued Lives helped me to develop my plan to move out of home and now support me to live independently. I have a mentor who helps me to shop and prepare my meals for the week. We do a big cook off each Friday! I have a network of supporters who come together to help me to make decisions and make sure my plan is on track. I am going to develop a book about living independently that I can share with people who are thinking about moving out of home for the first time.
I have co-presented a workshop with Valued Lives and am keen to share my story with others who want to live independently. It’s worked well for me and I am sure others can do this too. They can learn from my journey about how I have achieved this. You just need to have the right people around to help you out at times when you need support.
I live on my own in Mount Lawley with my Ragdoll cats Patreska and Mr Ghost. I enjoy playing my base guitar, selling the Big Issue in Perth and I generally like to live a quiet life.
Valued Lives helps me to work things out so I can make decisions about my life. Sometimes I ask them to come along with me as my advocate when I have important appointments and they then help me to follow up with the things I need to do. Valued Lives has also helped me to work out my plan for a better life that works for me, as I prefer not to have too many people in my home. I am really happy with my plan and am looking forward to moving into a new home, earning more money, improving my health and buying a new guitar.
